LASTMA’s Heroic Rescue as Container Crash Claims Driver Life
In a dramatic rescue operation, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) operatives demonstrated remarkable courage by saving a motor boy trapped beneath a toppled 40ft container. Tragically, the driver of the ill-fated vehicle lost his life in the accident.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred on Wharf Road, opposite the Area B Police Command, en route to Apapa, Lagos. Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, provided details about the harrowing accident.
Egbetola Sulaiman, a LASTMA official who led the rescue team, shared the chilling sequence of events. The accident involved a speeding 40ft container, fully loaded, which veered out of control and collided with a stationary tipper truck, lacking any registration number and grappling with tire troubles.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the speeding 40ft container lost control, leading to the collision with the stationary tipper truck,” the statement narrated.
Thanks to the swift response of LASTMA officials and other emergency responders, they managed to free the trapped motor boy from the wreckage. Regrettably, the driver of the container could not survive his injuries and succumbed on the spot.
While the deceased driver’s remains were transferred to the Area B Police Command, the rescued motor boy received immediate medical attention at the nearby General Hospital in Apapa.
Among the first responders at the scene were the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigerian Police, and the Nigerian Port Authority.
Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, seized the moment to issue a stern caution to truck drivers. He emphasized the paramount importance of considering the safety of other road users and exercising extreme care when navigating the roads.
This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent dangers faced by those in the transportation sector. It also underscores the vital role played by dedicated emergency responders during times of crisis.
