Edo Deputy Governor’s Office Relocated Amidst Political Turmoil
In an unexpected turn of events, Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, along with his staff, has been relocated from the Government House in Benin. This relocation, initiated by Governor Godwin Obaseki, comes in the midst of political tension and raises questions about the state’s leadership dynamics.
Workers from the deputy governor’s office have been busy moving their belongings to a new location on No. 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, GRA, Benin. This site now prominently bears the sign “Office of the Deputy Governor” and features an inauguration plaque dating back to December 16, 2014, commemorating its commissioning by former Governor Adams Aliu Oshiomhole.
What makes this move particularly intriguing is the recent withdrawal of an anti-impeachment lawsuit by Deputy Governor Shaibu. In this lawsuit, he had named the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services, Governor Obaseki, and the Chief Judge of Edo State as defendants. However, Shaibu abruptly withdrew the suit and expressed deep respect for Obaseki as his superior.
The deputy governor’s statement read: “I wish to sincerely thank and appreciate these well-meaning Nigerians, party leaders, traditional rulers, and my Archbishop, His Grace Most Rev’d Dr. Augustine Akubeze, for their kind words, advice, and encouragement thus far, in ensuring peace and unity in our dear state, Edo.”
The ongoing political turmoil in Edo State is rooted in the strained relationship between Obaseki and Shaibu. While the governor has accused his deputy of conspiring against him, Shaibu maintains his loyalty while affirming his intention to run for governorship in 2024.
Adding complexity to the situation is Obaseki’s preference for a successor from the Esanland/Edo Central senatorial district. He argues that this choice would ensure fairness, equity, and justice in the state’s political landscape.
The relocation of Shaibu’s office is seen by many as another chapter in the unfolding power struggle between the governor and his deputy. With Edo’s political climate growing increasingly contentious, all eyes remain fixed on the state for further developments in this political drama.
