Electoral Drama Unfolds Wins and Losses at Nigerian Tribunals Leave Parties in Shock

In recent developments at various election tribunals in Nigeria, political parties have seen mixed outcomes. The All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP) have all experienced victories and losses in their respective cases.

Plateau South Senatorial District: Simon Lalong, a former governor and Minister of Labour and Employment, secured victory as the Senator-elect in Plateau South. Running on the APC platform, his opponent from the PDP, Napoleon Bali, had his election nullified by the tribunal.
Abia State: In Abia, the tribunal invalidated the election of Munachim Alozie from the Labour Party in the Obingwa/Osisioma/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency. However, LP’s Ginger Onwusibe’s victory in Isiala Ngwa North and South Constituency was upheld, with petitions from the PDP and APC candidates dismissed.
Delta State: The tribunal in Asaba annulled the election of Rev. Francis Waive of the APC in the Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency. The reason cited was improper documentation, leading to a call for a re-run in Enwhe Ward 09.
Kano State: In Kano, the tribunal rejected APC’s petition against Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the Kano South Senatorial District election. Another NNPP candidate, Idris Dankawu, had his victory voided for alleged forgery of educational certificates.
Benue State: The tribunal upheld the election of Solomon Wombo of AD in the KatSina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency, stating that the petitioners failed to substantiate their claims.
Edo State: In Edo, the re-election of Peter Akpatason of the APC from Akoko-Edo Constituency was confirmed, while LP’s petition was dismissed. Additionally, the petition against LP’s Esosa Iyawe, representing Oredo Constituency in the House of Representatives, was also dismissed.
Delta State (Appeal): Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has taken his case to the Supreme Court. The Court of Appeal had directed the Delta State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to hear the LP candidate Ken Pela’s election petition, contesting Oborevwori’s victory.
