Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Akintola Williams, Pioneer Chartered Accountant
Akintola Williams, a pioneer in chartered accountancy not only in Nigeria but also across Africa, has passed away at the remarkable age of 104. His death was confirmed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Born in 1919, Akintola Williams was a true trailblazer. He earned a diploma in commerce from Yaba Higher College through a United Africa Company (UAC) scholarship. His journey into chartered accountancy began with an accounting degree from the University of London. In 1952, he made history by founding the first indigenous chartered accounting firm in Africa, Akintola Williams & Co, located in Lagos.
One of his most significant achievements was becoming Africa’s first chartered accountant at the age of 30. This pioneering accomplishment laid the foundation for countless others to follow in his footsteps. Akintola Williams became an emblem of excellence and professionalism in the accounting field, not only in Nigeria but also across the continent.
