INEC’s Failure to E-Transmit Results Shatters Trust, Says Former VP Aide
Laolu Akande, a former aide to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has voiced concerns over the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) inability to electronically transmit results in the recent Nigerian elections, stating that it has eroded trust among Nigerians.
Despite INEC’s assurances that it would electronically transmit polling unit results via the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), this did not occur during the presidential and National Assembly elections. The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal upheld INEC’s discretion in determining how to transmit election results.
Akande emphasized that while INEC may not have violated the law, it has undermined the trust of the Nigerian people. This development not only affects INEC’s credibility but also raises questions about the legitimacy of the election winners.
The former VP aide noted that the situation has resulted in cynicism and distrust among the public, and he holds INEC responsible for this erosion of trust.
