Lagos Blue Line Rail Exceeds Expectations Commuters Eager for More
In a surprising turn of events, the newly launched Lagos blue line rail system has gained immense popularity, recording an impressive 30 trips and accommodating over 7,000 passengers within just three days of operation. Commuters in Lagos have found the service to be efficient and punctual, prompting calls for more frequent trips.
Despite the rail’s limited operating hours, primarily during morning and evening peak periods, passengers are already advocating for expanded service. Many of these passengers, particularly business owners heading to CMS and Balogun markets, have commended the government for this initiative and the smooth travel experience it offers.
One passenger, Ihezuo Emeka, while appreciating the initiative, stressed the need for increased train frequency. He stated, “The government needs to increase the number of trips so that we can board every hour to our destinations.” Emeka also emphasized the significant contrast between train and bus commuting, highlighting the cost-effectiveness and convenience of the rail system.
Joseph Olaoluwa, another passenger, described the experience as “fun, seamless, and fast,” underscoring the time-saving aspect of the journey. He also praised the reduced transportation costs compared to traditional bus commutes.
In response to passengers’ feedback and demands for more frequent trips, officials from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the operators of the light rail system, clarified that they are currently in the testing phase to ensure a smooth transition to full operations powered by electricity.
The launch of the Lagos blue line rail system signifies a significant milestone after 12 years of planning and construction challenges. Once fully operational, this rail system is expected to revolutionize daily commutes for thousands of passengers, drastically reducing travel time and providing a cost-effective alternative to traditional bus transportation in Lagos.
