Understanding Nigeria’s Ongoing Battle Against Kidnapping
Kidnapping remains a pressing issue in Nigeria, with Rear Admiral Yaminu Musa (retd.), the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, shedding light on its far-reaching impact. At the Anti-Kidnap Multi-Agency fusion cell communication workshop in Abuja, Musa emphasized how kidnapping disrupts every facet of life, from economic activities to education.
Kidnapping for ransom has also evolved into a means for terrorist organizations to fund their operations, making it a dual threat. The Police Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the evolving dimensions of kidnapping, from ransom negotiations to victims being killed even after payment. To combat this, Adejobi called for breaking the conspiracy of silence and implementing stringent laws.
Peter Afunanya, the Department of State Services spokesperson, delved into the root causes, citing political, economic, and ideological factors. He also noted the erosion of family values as a contributing factor.
To address this crisis, Nigeria’s security agencies are working collaboratively, with specialized units in place to tackle kidnappings head-on. It’s clear that a multifaceted approach is required to combat this grave threat effectively.
