Nigerian Weightlifter Ruth Ayodele Dominates at 2023 IWF Championship

Ruth Ayodele, Nigeria’s weightlifting sensation, has made a significant mark at the 2023 IWF World Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Competing in the women’s 64kg category, the 23-year-old dynamo grabbed a trio of medals: two silvers and one bronze, highlighting her lifts of 100kg, 122kg, and an aggregate of 222kg.

While Ayodele’s debut on this international platform is noteworthy, the Colombian Mosquera Llamosa secured gold in a close contest. The competition had its share of drama, with two Colombians from the same city and club going head-to-head for the title.

Furthermore, Nigeria’s presence was strongly felt in other categories. Rafiatu Lawal made her country proud by securing the sixth position in the women’s 59kg division, and Adijat Olarinoye also showcased her prowess, claiming the 15th spot.

Ojadi Aduche, Nigeria’s head coach, couldn’t contain his pride. He praised Ayodele’s resilience, emphasizing her return to the sport after facing challenges. Aduche also pointed out the promising future of Nigerian weightlifting, with Rafiatu Lawal’s rise and upcoming talents like Joy Eze, signaling a bright horizon for the sport in the nation.
